Egg scraps cash withdrawals
Thousands of savers with Egg, the internet bank, will no longer be able to access their money at cash machines after the provider said it would scrap the facility from next month.
The change on June 30 will affect the 11,000 customers who have the bank’s Cash Card savings account – “only” 3,000 of whom, the bank says, use the card to withdraw cash on the high street.
The Cash Card account was closed to new savers in July 2005. None of the bank’s other accounts carries a withdrawal facility.
A spokesperson for the bank said cash withdrawals did not “fit with the rest of [Egg's] portfolio”, adding that customers could continue to manage their money online, by telephone or post.
